This is probably the most fuel efficient car because natural gasoline costs less than $1.00 a gallon. Those people who are in the look out for a very competent and fast compact car are the ones who buy this gem of a car. A racing car in golf‘s clothing the ABT R32 is very well suited for regular use for each and every day. ABT came up with a real extraordinary car on dynamic 19 inch BR-wheels. Instead of serial 250hp (184kW), the ABT R32 now delivers enormous 370hp (272kW). This immense addition in power of 120hp is possible as a result of the modified motor management and the use of the ABT compressor kit combined with a water cooled intercooler. All components are tuned perfectly to the potent Supercharged V6 engine by the Kempten engineers, and therefore offer permanently impressing driving values. For example, the ABT R32 sprints from0 to 100km/h in just 5.0 seconds, compared to 6.2 seconds for the serial R32. The top speed is more than 270km/h (167 MPH). Another very impressive factor is how the tuned engine is getting the job done. The six cylinder engine accelerates just as smoothly as powerfully in every rpm range.
“The R32 is as much fun on the motor way as on winding country roads,” explained Hans Jurgen of ABT. There is no need for any wonder how the Kempten Golfer which is equipped with the ABT adjustable sports suspension works perfectly with the 370 horses of the V6. The 2008 ABT R32 is using a 6 speed manual transmission system. The listed price for this small sport car is going to be $32,990.

Alpina B6 GT3

Alpina will try to polish its image and its motor sports pride when it enters its 6 series based B6 GT3 in the 2009 FIA European Championship next year fielding its own team, along with participating in a handful of high profile endurance races. The Alpina B6 S road car is the basis for the 2008 Alpina B6 GT3, and comes with a supercharged 4.4 liter V8 dolling out 530 hp, 725Nm and 535 lb. ft. of torque. That is more than enough to make it competitive with the rest of the field like Aston Martins, Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The B6 GT3 is not exclusively for Alpina’s own works team. They plan to sell race ready versions to private teams and collectors who can afford the price tag.
Well known F1 and Touring Car drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Hans Stuck and Dieter Quester were behind an Alpina steering wheel on their winning three European Touring Car Championships. Alpina pilots also won the Nurburgring 24 Hours many a times and the 24 Hours of Spa in 1970. “We think that the BMW 6 Series, especially with the super charged, torque laden 4.4 liter V8 Alpina engine from the B6 S (530 HP, 725 Nm) provides the ideal basis to challenge pure bred sports cars such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin within the framework of GT3 regulations”, said Andreas Bovensiepen, Alpina proprietor. After 20 years staying out of racing, Alpina will field a factory team, running the 2008 Alpina B6 GT3 in the 2009 FIA GT3 European Championship.

Hamann BMW M3
Since 1986 Hamann has developed and manufactured products for the individualization of BMW automobiles. The 16-cylinder “W” configuration engine is fed by four turbochargers and features 64 valves, generating 1001 horse power at 6000 rpm. The engine draws on its 8 liter displacement to deliver a maximum torque of 1250 Newton-meters between 2200 and 5500 rpm. With full time all wheel drive, the car’s phenomenal power produces exceptional handling, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.5 seconds. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 benefits from aeronautical and aerospace technologies, making it the fastest production car ever made. The car also features a braking system designed to deliver unprecedented powers of deceleration, establishing a new industry benchmark. The carbon fiber discs provide brake pressure of up to 180 bars, combined with eight-piston mono bloc calipers and titanium pistons fitted with fine steel heads and ceramic heat protectors. Apply the brakes at speeds above 200 km/h, and the rear wing acts as an airbrake, positioning itself at an angle of 113 degrees in less than 0.4 seconds, further improving the Bugatti Veyron’s already impressive stopping power. The airbrake increases negative lift at the rear of the car to 300 kg, enhancing the braking torque on the rear axle. At 400 km/h, emergency braking will bring the sports car to a complete halt in less than 10 seconds. This exceptional model is priced at 1.55 million euros (not including tax), available at the end of 2008.

SUPER MEAN-MACHINES

SSC Ultimate Aero TT, world's fastest production car with a top speed of 256.15 mph (412.23 km/h).

Supercar is a term generally used for a high-end sports car, whose performance is highly superior to that of its contemporaries. It has been defined specifically as "a very expensive, fast or powerful car with a centrally located engine"[1], and stated in more general terms: "it must be very fast, with sporting handling to match," "it should be sleek and eye-catching" and its price should be "one in a rarified atmosphere of its own."[2] but the proper application of the term is subjective and disputed, especially among enthusiasts. The use of the term can be dependent on the era; a vehicle that may have been considered a supercar in one decade may not be considered the same in another decade.[citation needed] The term supercar may refer to factory-built, street-legal sports cars. Concentrated and full of dynamic body tension. This is how the silhouette of the super sports car called STALLION presents itself. But the latest development of the premium refiner HAMANN MOTORSPORT offers far more than a fascinating new aerodynamics concept. The efficiency boost to 630 hp and the HAMANN-sport chassis turn the STALLION into one of the most powerful and fastest sports car in the whole world.Less roof – more wingsThe most striking eye-catcher of the individualised Porsche is the lowered roofline. For this elaborate reconstruction, HAMANN reduces the windows and pillars up to 8 centimetres. Thereby, the reduced front surface diminishes the air resistance and therefore the fuel consumption. Moreover, this relieves the motor drastically while pushing for maximum speed. But that´s not all: HAMANN equips the STALLION with gull-wing doors allowing the door to swing diagonally outward from the body of the car. This proprietary development does not only have an extravagant design, but also an exceptional stability. The combination between the HAMANN front- and rear skirt with the altered heck spoiler profile and the roof spoiler produce additional road grip. Side spoilers between the axles put a finishing tough to the overall appearance.
Sensational performance based on well-engineered technologyThe core of the STALLION is its modified engine. The HAMANN motor technicians enhance the 3.6 litres Boxer Biturbo motor from standard 480 hp / 353 kW to 630 hp / 463 kW at 6,300 rpm. The upgrade also includes two larger VNT (variable nozzle turbochargers), a sport air strainer, a stainless steel exhaust system with metal catalytic converters and a new motor management.
These are measures which certainly hit their target. The HAMANN STALLION accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and is therefore six tenth of a second faster than its serial counterpart. The new maximum speed tag is sensational. With its efficiency boost and the reduced air resistance by HAMANN-Aerodynamics, the STALLION achieves a maximum speed of 359 km/h (223 mph) nd chassis – the combination for best roadholding and exclusive appearance HAMANN developed a sport chassis and a matching wheel-/tyre-combination for the optimal handling of the increased requirements of the STALLION. The three-part HAMANN aluminium wheel named EDITION RACE with its black lacquered star and the titan bolting of the high gloss polished rim flange clearly emphasise the affinity of the Laupheim-based refiner to motor sports.
Due to its forge technology production, it is very light and therefore significantly improves the handling- and driving qualities. The wheel-tyre combination is available in 8,5Jx20 inches with tyres measuring 245/30ZR20 in front and 12,0Jx20 rims with 325/25ZR20 tyres at the back. HAMANN recommends top-level tyres type S1 EVO by its technology partner HANKOOK. Lowering the vehicle centre by 20 mm with HAMANN sport coils also significantly improves the handling.
Perfect combination between motor sports and lifestyleOnly the most precious materials can be found in the STALLION interior. The HAMANN upholsterers only use selected leather for covering the fittings and sport seats. Aluminium gear shift and aluminium pedals make the cockpit gleam in a noble look and perfectly match with the carbon parts of the interior set. Precisely applied embroideries of the HAMANN logo in the floor mats and headrests set further creative accents. All of these features complement one another in a stylish symbioses of motor sports flair and lifestyle.

Pagani Zonda Cinque
Pagani’s latest version of the Zonda, named the Cinque, is a street legal version of the race-only Zonda R and it will price at $1,240,000. In Pagani the carbon fiber is the specific know how and a perfect combination of technology and beauty. No compromises are accepted in the use of innovative materials, always the state of art, to express the passion and skill of who designed and built them.
Back in 1999, launch year of the first Zonda, the Pagani has been focusing its strategies on the research of light weight. The chassis, completely made of composite and other light and innovative materials, contained the weight to 1250 kilos, when all the other cars of the same segment would weight from 30 to 50% more. The design was revealed at the 2008 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este held in Cernobbio, Italy. Produced from 1978 to 1981, the M1 was BMW’s first and only mid-engined street car. A total of 456 M1s were built when BMW took over the Italian firm when it undergoes financial problems. Specifications and pricing will be revealed by the end of the year.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
With the new 2008 Gallardo LP560-4, Lamborghini once again sets a very high standard for super sports cars. The heart of the Gallardo LP560-4 is the new 5.2 liter V10 engine with an output of 560 PS (412 kW) at 8000 rpm. The increase of 40 PS compared with that of the previous Gallardo, and the approximate 20 kilogram reduction in weight, improves the power weight ratio to 2.5 kilograms per PS (hp) and thus enhances performance. The LP560-4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, its speed at 11.8 seconds is 200 km/h and its top speed is 325 km/h.
The Gallardo has improved traction, controlling and stability at high speeds. The redesigned four-wheel drive transmission, the new suspension and the optimized aerodynamics as well as the reduced weight and decreased friction between the components, all contribute to the overall improvements in the vehicle. The car is also surprisingly suited to long-distance driving and despite its extreme performance capabilities is very easy to control while maintaining maximum stability.
The newly designed front of the LP 560-4 squats deeply to the ground which adds to its aerodynamic efficiency. The larger and clearly improved cooling intakes meet the demands of augmented engine power thus increasing the air circulation vital to a vehicle as powerful as this. The spoiler, positioned low between the air intakes, improves aerodynamic equilibrium at high speeds. The rear lights, air cooling vents, bumper and diffuser are arranged in precise positions on the car’s exterior, which make the LP560-4 appear extremely wide and bonded to the road surface. From air-powered cars to battery operated cars, cars have come a long way since their invention in the late 1700's. Inventors then dreamed of a "horseless carriage", a vehicle that could travel under its own power. The cars in 1700 were but mere steam-propelled road vehicles, and were extremely unreliable - they made noise, destroyed roads and even exploded in your face.
Since then cars have made much progress and we now travel in air-conditioned sedans fitted with gadgets and gizmos like car radios, cigarette lighters and such. Cars today are not just a mode of transport, but also a luxury item, one to be ridden in comfort, one in which one can take a nap in.
Cars in the near future? We can only dream of them now, but this site will give you an insight as to what it might be
But then, the future is the future, and we'll know when it comes. This website does not predict what the future of cars is going to be, but rather give you an insight as to what it might be.

Future Cars: The Green Alternative

The cars of the future were once thought to be nice addictions to auto shows or fantastical dreams of some car junkie, but future cars are much more important than ever before. With the environment on everyone's mind, the emergence of Peak Oil, and an economy dependent on foreign oil, future cars are one of the pieces to the puzzle in rescuing society from many of the impending disasters it is facing. From the Prius to the Tesla, future cars have become the hot item in today's public eye, yet even more important they have become the green item as well, helping to revive and inspire a green and alternative consciousness in main stream society. At Future Cars we’re fostering an online community dedicated to providing unbiased information about the future cars and future vehicles —how they will run, how viable they are, and how they will contribute to a cleaner environment and end our international dependence on oil and other fossil fuels. Here you will find news and information on a number of future cars, alternative fuels, and emerging technologies of the future, all in a language that’s easy to understand.

Featured Future Cars

Volvo Recharge

With the aide of British electromagnetic specialists PML Flightlink, Volvo has put together a dynamite powertrain that offers enough mileage on the battery alone to make the gas engine little more than a security blanket—the perfect means of weaning us all off of gasoline and other fossil fuels...

For more info on Volvo Recharge visit:

http://www.volvocars.com/

Pininfarina Sintesi
Type: Hydrogen fuel cell

Class: 4-door sports car

Manufacturer: Pininfarina

The Manufacturer says …
“Our source of inspiration [for the Sintesi] was man’s freedom over technology, a car in which technology gives creative freedom back to the designer and allows us to explore new forms and future scenarios.”
The Critics Say...

“Pininfarina’s latest work [is] a cutting-edge technology showcase … designed to explore new typologies of mobility, active safety and packaging solutions.”—motorauthority.com

Overview

We try to avoid reviewing concept cars with any regularity here at Futurecars but every so often concepts come along whose technology displays so much great potential and whose design is so fantastic that they demand we spill a little ink on them. The Pininfarina Sintesi is one of those concepts. Famed Italian car design firm Pininfarina—responsible for the breathless designs of Ferrari’s Maserati’s, Alfa Romeo’s and more—typically uses the Geneva Auto Show to unveil her concepts and the 2008 show was no different in that respect, presenting the stunning and stylish Sintesi hydrogen fuel cell car.

What We Like

•The “Liquid” Packaging. This concept doesn’t “consider the car as a form which covers mechanical parts and passengers, but rather to give form to the mechanical parts around the passengers.” It improves weight distribution and lowers the center of gravity, contributing to its driving dynamics. Credit the company’s collaboration with Nuvera, developers of the Quadrivium Fuel Cells system. This system distributes the powertrain, putting the four in-wheel electric motors and four fuel cell stacks on the frame near the wheels.

• The design. The Sintesi’s smooth, stylish lines create, in their words, a “continuous looped surface that, starting from the front wing, stretches along the side of the car, naturally blends into the rear fender and then turns around the side window to dive back under the front wing.”

• The cabin. Unlike any interior we’ve ever seen, the fluid beauty of the Sintesi’s innovative cabin was designed as an integral aspect of the exterior.

• The headlights. Right, the headlights, because with tele-cameras and a proximity radar they are the eyes and ears of the vehicle’s far-reaching and futuristic Transparent Mobility system which envisions a world in which cars communicate with one another and the surrounding environment.

What We Don’t Like

• The concept. Meaning only that we wish she weren’t a concept car. ("MI" or "the company"), a California company engaged in the development of a personal aircraft known as ‘the Skycar.’”—From Securities and Exchange Commission v. Moller International Inc and Paul S. Moller, Defendants (U.S.D.C., Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division, Civil Action No. 2:03-CV-261)

Overview

So much of the automotive industry runs on the fumes generated by hype; how much air can you blow? And it’s very easy, even for jaded industry veterans, to fall for it, generally because you want to believe. One look at the 4-passenger Moller M400 Skycar and we don’t much care who you are, this is a dynamo—hustler and hooker, the collective futurecars dream. Then we wake. And it’s a mess. Of the manufacturer’s claims quoted above, namely that the M400 is “feasible, personally affordable, personal vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle”, the one that is hardest to accept—and that almost ruins the dream for us—is the VTOL aspect. This technology requires an extraordinary amount of force and thrust. The manufacture claims it can achieve this with “a patented thrust deflection vane system that redirects thrust.” Could be, but to get an idea of how successful the far-better-funded US Army has been with VTOL, read about the V-22 Osprey. Or better yet, read about the RAF’s Harrier Jump Jet, with which the M400 claims some technological affinity.

What We Like

• The design and the cockpit. In the video on this site, watch Adam Savage from Mythbusters gush when he gets in. He’s gushing for all of us, because that is one killer cockpit, purely because of what it suggests for the future.

• The fuel. Ethanol, with some suggestion that compressed natural gas (CNG) might also be feasible.

• The safety. Emergency parachutes (you won’t likely see that again anytime soon in a car review).

What We Don’t Like

• The efficiency. After gasping at so many of the web site’s proposed specifications, 20 mpg is a bit of a disappointment. Moller M400 Skycar SpecificationsPropulsion system:Eight Rotapower duel-fuel Engines Top Speed: 375 mph Zero-to-60: NA MPG: NA Vehicle range: 750 miles Fuel(s): Ethanol or gasoline Tailpipe emissions: Yes ConclusionUltimately, the M400 kicks off a sweet daydream. Who can’t, after a gasp, imagine themselves cruising at 36,000 feet, zooming along at 360 mph in your own personal flying car, tunes cranking at full blast? Sadly it’s simply too difficult to take it all too, too seriously. Yet.

Lightning GT

Type: 100% electric vehicle

Class: Roadster

Manufacturer: Lightning Car Company

The Manufacturer says...

“Combining classic, British sports car design with racing car technology and state of the art NanoSafe™ battery power and Hi-Pa Drive™ electric motor innovation, the Lightning GT has been developed with exhilarating performance front of mind.”

The Critics Say...

“With a purported 700hp, the Lightning GT might be the most powerful all electric vehicle to hit the consumer market.” —gadgetreview.com“For those of you high-performance electric car enthusiasts that were hoping to see this as an alternative to the Tesla Roadster, don't hold your breath to see this one come across the pond any time soon.” —autobloggreen.com

Overview

This sleek, luxury, high-performance 2-door roadster from Peterborough, UK-based Lightning Car Company is heart-stopping. It is expected to go into production in late 2008 for British consumers first. What We Like

• The drive motors. Hi-Pa Drive™ technology means the Lightning has four 120kw power Permanent Magnet brushless motors, one in each wheel. Putting the motors in the wheels increases efficiency and is a brilliant emerging technology in the field.

• The battery system. US-based Altaimano’s NanoSafe™ nanotech batteries are non-toxic, they have a life expectancy of 12 years or more, can be recharged in ten little minutes, retain 85% of their charge capacity after 15,000 charges, and can handle extreme temperatures.

• The design. The lightweight carbon fibre/Kevlar composite technology has been molded into a sexy, sporty roadster that takes your breath away, especially when you realize its all-electric.

• The standard features. Among others, they include anti-lock brakes and regenerative braking, forged alloy wheels, an entertainment system, and the home-based charging system (EVCS). Air-conditioning is listed as an option, but when the vehicle comes stateside, we expect that to change. What We Don’t Like

• The price estimates. They have not posted a sticker price; rather, they are accept reservation deposits in the amount of £15,000. At least one web site claims the price to top £150,000 ($290,000 or so US); we’ll wait to hear from Lightning on the matter, but that price is way beyond the average consumer’s budget. Nonetheless, the GT’s battery pack and four in-hub motors—two promising technologies that give us hope—are stellar picks set inside a jaw-dropping automobile.

For information on Future cars and their technologies, visit:

http://www.futurecars.com/

TYPES OF HYBRID CARS

With global warming gripping the world for real, there is an urgent requirement for the people to cut on fuel emissions. Fuel emissions from vehicles are accounted to be the biggest contributor in adding greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Thus, a solution needs to be developed by which people won’t have to sacrifice on using cars for their transport facilities and at the same time not degrade the environment.

The answer to this is - Hybrid Cars. The hybrid cars help to cut fuel consumption by almost 50%-60%, thereby reducing fuel emissions. Though it runs on electricity, it uses fuel alternatively. This is so because all hybrid cars derive their power from two engines: Gasoline and Electric engine. The car starts by igniting the gasoline engine and as it gathers speed, the electric engine takes over automatically. At the same time, when the car stops the gasoline engine takes over.

Types of Hybrid Technologies
Currently, there are two types of hybrid car technologies in the market. The first one is called Series. In this, the gasoline engine is first used to start up the car. After attaining a certain level of speed, the electric engine takes over automatically. Similarly, when you apply brakes to stop the car, the electric engine gradually shifts the power to the gasoline engine. The gasoline engine can also be used to charge the electric engine.

The second technology is called Parallels. Though the physical configuration of the technology is the same as the former, it is the performance that is different. Though the gasoline engine can be used to start and stop the vehicle, the electric engine is used to enhance the power of the car as and when required. The Parallels technology is used in those hybrid cars that are more used for long-distance traveling.
Hybrid cars should be advertised with a great zeal and enthusiasm in the market in order to make people realize the potential of environment friendly vehicles. Though there are many hybrid vehicles doing really well, more awareness is needed to increase the usage of hybrid vehicles and repair the damage done to the environment.

Examples of Hybrid Cars:

Nissan Pivo 2 Concept Car
Nissan introduced the Pivo concept car almost 2 years back and now it is back with the latest model of the futuristic concept car. The Pivo 2, which was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show, has also been exhibited at the Geneva Auto Show ’08. The striking looks of this small car combined with its really unique features makes it grab the limelight effortlessly. Check out its unique features as given below.

The Nissan Pivo 2 runs on compact Lithium-ion battery. But what steals the show is the fact that it has a rotating cabin and wheels that can rotate 360 degrees. Due to its unique rotating feature, the reverse gear is done away with. The wheels can turn sideways and then the cabin can be turned in the direction you want to go and this also allows easy parking. This car also has a voice recognizing interface, known as the Robotic Agent.
You can have basic conversations with the Robotic Agent during your drive and also ask for directions or the nearest parking space or even basic vehicle functions. This feature is available in English and Japanese languages. This will make your journeys less stressful and you will also have company during your long drives! The car is shaped like a round dome with four small wheels which makes it look like it has been made for the hi-tech future living.

Toyota iQ Concept City Car
Toyota unveiled its concept car, iQ ‘the city car’ in the Geneva Auto Show of 2008. The Japan-based automobile giant had already introduced the concept car to the world in Frankfurt last year. However, the finished version of the iQ car, designed mainly for city travel purpose, made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show. As per the company officials, iQ will be offered to the consumers with a choice of one diesel and two gasoline engines.

The company officials also announced that the car will made available in Europe only and it is not meant for the United States. As per estimates, it is expected to sell somewhere around 100,000 iQs in the first full year of its production. As per the measurements of the car go, its length is 117.51 inches. As per Toyota, iQ is the smallest four seater car of the world. The best part is that it has been designed in such a way that it will easily fit in four people, three adults and one kid, within its structure.

Though the size of the sir conditioning unit of the car has been reduced, the performance is as good as that of a full sized one. Other improvements brought about in the Toyota iQ are flat under floor fuel tank, slimmed down dashboard, narrower seats and a compact differential. It is basically a small, fuel efficient that has been designed environmental considerations in mind. The car will return only 100 gm per km in carbon dioxide emissions. In short, small, but smart!

Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode
Hyundai recently unveiled their CUV concept car, the HED - 5 i-mode. One look at this car and you feel like you have been transported in the hi-tech future. The futuristic look and appeal of this car may or may not attract customers, but the technical specifications should definitely do so. The emphasis has been on providing comfort to the passengers and this is what inspired them to get revolving seats in the car. The swivel concept has been engineered by the German firm, Keiper.

The front of the car has bulges and creases all over making it look macho! Hyundai has often been credited with bringing in new designs and freshness in their cars. The rear end of the car stumbles when it comes to looks and styling. However, the car is no less than a digital entertainment center and LG electronics has been roped in to provide the necessary thrills inside the car. You can easily browse the web, play video games, watch movies and also have wireless interaction while driving.

The car is expected to have a 2.2 liter diesel engine. It will produce a maximum power of 215 ps and a maximum torque of 461 Nm. This same concept is expected to be tried on some other select Hyundai car models by 2009. The car’s capacity for re-circulating the exhaust gas thus reducing NOx emissions also helps cut down on fuel consumption. This car or at least the concept is expected to be on the road by 2011.

Saab 9-X BioHybrid
Proudly standing amongst a host of other vehicles, is the grand looking Saab 9-X BioHybrid at the Geneva Auto Show ’08. It has been built on the next generation Global Compact Car of General Motors. Though it is mostly a concept as of now, it won’t be long before you can spot one of these in the showrooms. The car definitely steals the limelight due to its futuristic design and absolutely gorgeous looks.

Just like other Saab concepts, the 9-X displays almost the same design, more so in the fenders and the nose. The roof has a downward slope as it goes towards the back of the car. The active aerodynamics helps this hatchback from the wind. If the car sprints at more than 70km/h, a spoiler wraps over the rear pillar and a diffuser extends below the back bumper to reduce drag. This sleek and stylish car has a smooth body and no visible door handles and gives a glimpse of futuristic compact cars.

The Saab 9-X comes with a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is designed to run on ethanol. It gives a power of 200 hp. The fuel efficiency of the car is enhanced by the next generation GM Hybrid system. There is a solar panel attached on the roof, which further enhances the battery charging capability. This car is all set to give a fierce competition to Mini in the premium compact segment in Europe. The heat is yet to catch up in the US.

Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid
The upcoming Geneva Auto Show promises to impress you with some of the most dazzling beauties. Amongst them will be the ‘Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid’. Earlier a speculation, the news has now been confirmed by the Germany-based automobile giant. Launched in a unique, new color - vivid blue, it is a five-seater all set to make a solid impact upon you. Golf TDI Hybrid is expected to average fuel consumption of 3.4L/100km or 69 mpg (US) in the European cycle. At the same time, it will havecarbon-dioxide emissions of just 90 g/km.

Being a full hybrid, the car will run on diesel, electricity, or a combination of the two. The diesel engine of the automobile is a 75 PS (74 HP) 3-cylinder TDI. It will also have a 27-horsepower electric motor, which will be powered by a trunk-mounted NiMH battery. Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid comprises of 7-speed DSG dual clutch transmission, rather than the usual CVTs used in hybrid cars. Regenerative braking and a stop/start system have been used in the automobile.

There is also an Energy Monitor screen on the instrument panel, which lets the driver know about the powertrain's goings-on. The other features of Volkswagen Golf TDI Hybrid comprise of a lowered suspension, a narrower grille opening and low-rolling-resistance tires. In short, the car promises to make use improved aerodynamics and save both fuel and environment. The best part is that it will not remain a concept car only and is expected to hit the roads by end of 2009. Let’s hope that the expectation comes true.

sQuba Concept Car
Fiction is turning into reality day by day. Thirty years after we saw Roger Moore driving a car underwater in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’, the scene has become reality. Rinspeed, a Swiss automobile company launched sQuba, the first underwater car of the world. It is a concept car that will be unveiled by the company in the Geneva Motor Show, to be held in March 2008. sQuba can drive both on road as well as under water.

You just need to push a button and the car can scuba dive up to 10 meters (33 feet) under the sea. Rinspeed has made use of cutting-edge technology to make the ‘amphibian’ car. sQuba boasts of a steel chassis and has extremely lightweight body panels, which have been made up of carbon nanotubes. While on road, the car makes use of an electric motor that provides rear-wheel drive. As soon as it goes under water, it makes use of the two propellers in the stern.
There are also two jet drives in the bow, which aid the vehicle in propelling forward. Another plus point of sQuba is that it gives out zero emissions and thus, presents no risk of polluting the sea. Even on road, the environmental-friendly feature of the car is a big plus. sQuba is a two-seater car that also has a self-contained on-board oxygen system. Thus, the driver as well as the passenger can easily have fresh air for breathing underwater. For now, sQuba is only a concept car and there is no plan of mass-producing it in the near future.

For more details and examples visit:

http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/magazine/concept-cars-2.html

HISTORY OF CARS

A multi-part feature on the history of automobiles starting with the first steam, electrical, and gasoline-engine cars. Learn the controversy behind what was the first car in history and the importance of the internal combustion engine. The lives of many famous automotive makers are explored in detail with special pages on the assembly line, the origins of the name automobile, the patent disputes, and more.
The birth of the car as we know it today took several years and the works and developments of many people. It was not until 1885 that the first car rolled down the streets; however, earlier attempts at steam powered road vehicles were successful, giving people the idea that cars as we know them today have existed for a lot longer than they have.
The first steam-powered vehicle was designed by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769 and could attain speeds of up to 6 km/hour. Two years later, he designed another, much faster steam-driven engine, which was so fast that it rammed into a wall, recording the world's first car accident. These early steam-powered vehicles were so heavy that they were only practical on a perfectly flat surface as strong as iron. However impractical as these cars may have been, the design for these vehicles were the basis for the first self-propelled vehicles and ultimately the basis for the design of the car we know today.
The next step towards the development of the car was the invention of the internal combustion engine. Francois Isaac de Rivaz designed the first internal combustion engine in 1807, using a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen to generate energy. Several designs were developed for a car to run on the internal combustion engine during the early 19 th century, but with little to no degree of commercial success due to the fact that there was no known fuel that could be safely internally combusted.
In 1860, Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir, a Frenchman, built the first successful two-stroke gas driven engine. Two years later, he again built an experimental vehicle by his gas-engine, which ran at a speed of 3 kms/hour and drove it from Paris to Joinville. Both of these cars became popular and by 1865 could be frequently seen on the roads. Unfortunately, Lenoir died broke before he could ever make any money or even enjoy his invention.
After several small changes to Lenoir's design, In September of 1893, after several small changes to Lenoir's design, the first gasoline powered car, built by brothers Charles and Frank Duryear, was ready for road trials. The first run on public roads was made on September 21, 1893 in Springfield, MA.. When most people think of the first cars on the road, they think Henry Ford, but it was not until 1896 that one of Henry Ford's cars could be seen on the road. He sold his first car, which he called the Quadracycle, for $200 and used the money to build another car. With the financial backing of the Mayor of Detroit and other wealthy Detroiters, Ford formed the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899. A few prototypes were built, but no production cars were ever made by this company and it was dissolved in January 1901. Ford would not offer a car for sale again until 1903.
The development of the automobile changed the face of small-town America. As time passed, cars became less of luxury and more of a necessity. However, after a century of automobiles, we are finally realizing the long-term effects of transport by internal combustion and are looking for alternative forms of fuel and transportation.
Early Steam Powered Cars
Old Engraving depicting the 1771 crash of Nicolas Joseph Cugnot's steam-powered car into a stone wall.

The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide. It is estimated that over 100,000 patents created the modern automobile. However, we can point to the many firsts that occurred along the way. Starting with the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle that had been drawn up by both Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton.
In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (1725 - 1804). Cugnot used a steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin. It was used by the French Army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 1/2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front (see engraving above). The following year (1770), Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried four passengers.
In 1771, Cugnot drove one of his road vehicles into a stone wall, making Cugnot the first person to get into a motor vehicle accident. This was the beginning of bad luck for the inventor. After one of Cugnot's patrons died and the other was exiled, the money for Cugnot's road vehicle experiments ended.
Steam engines powered cars by burning fuel that heated water in a boiler, creating steam that expanded and pushed pistons that turned the crankshaft, which then turned the wheels. During the early history of self-propelled vehicles - both road and railroad vehicles were being developed with steam engines. (Cugnot also designed two steam locomotives with engines that never worked well.) Steam engines added so much weight to a vehicle that they proved a poor design for road vehicles; however, steam engines were very successfully used in locomotives. Historians, who accept that early steam-powered road vehicles were automobiles, feel that Nicolas Cugnot was the inventor of the first automobile.
After Cugnot Several Other Inventors Designed Steam-Powered Road Vehicles
Cugnot’s vehicle was improved by Frenchman, Onesiphore Pecqueur, who also invented the first differential gear.
In 1789, the first U.S. patent for a steam-powered land vehicle was granted to Oliver Evans.
In 1801, Richard Trevithick built a road carriage powered by steam - the first in Great Britain.
In Britain, from 1820 to 1840, steam-powered stagecoaches were in regular service. These were later banned from public roads and Britain's railroad system developed as a result.
Steam-driven road tractors (built by Charles Deitz) pulled passenger carriages around Paris and Bordeaux up to 1850.
In the United States, numerous steam coaches were built from 1860 to 1880. Inventors included: Harrison Dyer, Joseph Dixon, Rufus Porter, and William T. James.
Amedee Bollee Sr. built advanced steam cars from 1873 to 1883. The "La Mancelle" built in 1878, had a front-mounted engine, shaft drive to the differential, chain drive to the rear wheels, steering wheel on a vertical shaft and driver's seat behind the engine. The boiler was carried behind the passenger compartment.
In 1871, Dr. J. W. Carhart, professor of physics at Wisconsin State University, and the J. I. Case Company built a working steam car that won a 200-mile race. Early Electric Cars
Steam engines were not the only engines used in early automobiles. Vehicles with electrical engines were also invented. Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first electric carriage. Electric cars used rechargeable batteries that powered a small electric motor. The vehicles were heavy, slow, expensive, and needed to stop for recharging frequently. Both steam and electric road vehicles were abandoned in favor of gas-powered vehicles. Electricity found greater success in tramways and streetcars, where a constant supply of electricity was possible.
The History of Electric VehiclesLearn more about the history of electrical vehicles from 1890 to the present.
However, around 1900, electric land vehicles in America outsold all other types of cars. Then in the several years following 1900, sales of electric vehicles took a nosedive as a new type of vehicle came to dominate the consumer market.

The Early Years - Electric Cars (1890 - 1930)

Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first crude electric carriage. A small-scale electric car was designed by Professor Stratingh of Groningen, Holland, and built by his assistant Christopher Becker in 1835. Practical and more successful electric road vehicles were invented by both American Thomas Davenport and Scotsmen Robert Davidson around 1842. Both inventors were the first to use non-rechargeable electric cells. Frenchmen Gaston Plante invented a better storage battery in 1865 and his fellow countrymen Camille Faure improved the storage battery in 1881. This improved-capacity storage battery paved the way for electric vehicles to flourish.
France and Great Britain were the first nations to support the widespread development of electric vehicles in the late 1800s. In 1899, a Belgian built electric racing car called "La Jamais Contente" set a world record for land speed - 68 mph - designed by Camille Jénatzy.
It was not until 1895 that Americans began to devote attention to electric vehicles after an electric tricycle was built by A. L. Ryker and William Morrison built a six-passenger wagon both in 1891. Many innovations followed and interest in motor vehicles increased greatly in the late 1890s and early 1900s. In 1897, the first commercial application was established as a fleet of New York City taxis built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of Philadelphia.
The early electric vehicles, such as the 1902 Wood's Phaeton (top image), were little more than electrified horseless carriages and surreys. The Phaeton had a range of 18 miles, a top speed of 14 mph and cost $2,000. Later in 1916, Woods invented a hybrid car that had both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor.

By the turn of the century, America was prosperous and cars, now available in steam, electric, or gasoline versions, were becoming more popular. The years 1899 and 1900 were the high point of electric cars in America, as they outsold all other types of cars. Electric vehicles had many advantages over their competitors in the early 1900s. They did not have the vibration, smell, and noise associated with gasoline cars. Changing gears on gasoline cars was the most difficult part of driving, while electric vehicles did not require gear changes. While steam-powered cars also had no gear shifting, they suffered from long start-up times of up to 45 minutes on cold mornings. The steam cars had less range before needing water than an electric's range on a single charge. The only good roads of the period were in town, causing most travel to be local commuting, a perfect situation for electric vehicles, since their range was limited. The electric vehicle was the preferred choice of many because it did not require the manual effort to start, as with the hand crank on gasoline vehicles, and there was no wrestling with a gear shifter.
While basic electric cars cost under $1,000, most early electric vehicles were ornate, massive carriages designed for the upper class. They had fancy interiors, with expensive materials, and averaged $3,000 by 1910. Electric vehicles enjoyed success into the 1920s with production peaking in 1912.
The decline of the electric vehicle was brought about by several major developments:
By the 1920s, America had a better system of roads that now connected cities, bringing with it the need for longer-range vehicles.
The discovery of Texas crude oil reduced the price of gasoline so that it was affordable to the average consumer.
The invention of the electric starter by Charles Kettering in 1912 eliminated the need for the hand crank.
The initiation of mass production of internal combustion engine vehicles by Henry Ford made these vehicles widely available and affordable in the $500 to $1,000 price range. By contrast, the price of the less efficiently produced electric vehicles continued to rise. In 1912, an electric roadster sold for $1,750, while a gasoline car sold for $650.
